The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has hailed the implementation of the Publican Artificial Intelligence (AI) Trade Solution at the country's ports, which has generated over US$300 million in additional customs revenue since its adoption. IEAG Executive Secretary Samson Asaki Awingobit attributed the success to practical experiences of its members and noted that the system has led to a 17.5 percent increase in assessed customs collections over original values declared by importers.
Over 366,000 import declarations have been analyzed, with about 24 percent triggering valuation risk indicators requiring further review. IEAG praised technology's ability to improve revenue mobilization without the need for new systems. However, they cautioned importers to verify duty assessments independently and urged the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to address container congestion at Tema Port.
The Association also called on the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Revenue Authority to improve the appeals process, calibration of the valuation database, and stakeholder engagement.
