Protest erupts as Madrid forest firefighters warn of staff shortages and old equipment

Madrid's forest firefighters are protesting against staff shortages and outdated equipment, demanding better working conditions and year-round employment. Currently, only 60 out of 124 budgeted positions are filled, leaving 64 vacant during a period when wildfire risk remains high across the city. The workers claim the strike has been ongoing for over 1,200 days, with negotiations not taking place for more than 816 days.

They argue that the mandatory use of expired or old protective equipment poses significant safety risks, especially during intense wildfires. The firefighters want year-round contracts, proper recognition as forest firefighters, and effective compliance with safety regulations. The regional government has proposed a €132 monthly supplement for 2027, but the firefighters' representatives have rejected it as insufficient.

The ongoing dispute highlights the need for a well-equipped and permanently staffed firefighting service to prevent and respond to major wildfires effectively.
