Principle wants companies to stop predicting the future — and start simulating it

What if companies could simulate thousands of potential futures instead of trying to predict a single one? That's the core concept behind Principle, an AI-powered platform that builds digital models of organizations, competitors, regulators, and market forces. Founder Artur Kiulian explains that Principle isn't about predicting the future but rather creating an "action machine" to help companies navigate uncertainty.

Kiulian's passion for the venture stems from personal experience. He saw firsthand the consequences of failing to prepare for unexpected events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Frustrated by the lack of adequate strategies, he began using AI to stress-test various scenarios, which led to the creation of Principle.

Principle uses large language models (LLMs) as compressed world models, grounded in real-world market conditions. The system maps the current state of the market, asks digital twins to make decisions under these conditions, and then progresses the simulation step by step as each actor responds to the others. This allows companies to explore various strategic options, such as entering new markets, making acquisitions, or preparing for regulatory changes, and to see how these decisions might play out under different circumstances.

The company has already gained traction in the government sector, providing AI policy decision-making simulations for governments in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. However, Kiulian acknowledges that translating this work into a sustainable business model has been challenging, particularly when competing with established companies like BP. Despite this, Principle remains committed to empowering companies to build resilience in the face of future uncertainties.
