Power supply remains stable despite prolonged dry weather, Sarawak Energy assures

KUCHING (Aug 28): Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) has assured that the state's electricity supply remains stable and sufficient despite ongoing dry weather conditions. The utility has adjusted its generation mix to accommodate reduced water inflows at significant hydropower plants. Lower rainfall in catchment areas since April 2025 led to diminished reservoir levels at the Bakun, Murum, and Batang Ai hydropower plants.

Sarawak Energy explained that hydropower output may need to be decreased during prolonged dry spells to preserve reservoir levels, with thermal generation ramped up as necessary to maintain a dependable electricity supply. The company highlighted that its integrated power system enables electricity generation to be adjusted based on current hydrological conditions, with hydropower typically supplying about 65% of the grid's electricity, thermal generation around 34%, and other sources making up the remaining 1%.

Sarawak Energy is closely monitoring hydrological and reservoir conditions at the three hydropower plants in collaboration with the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, Sarawak Disaster Management Committee, National Disaster Management Agency, Malaysian Meteorological Department, and Rural Water Supply Department. Cloud-seeding operations were conducted in May and June to boost rainfall over major dam and water catchment areas, with a further series planned from September 3 to 5.

As dry conditions persist, Sarawak Energy has advised customers to conserve electricity, particularly when using air-conditioners and other cooling devices. Customers are encouraged to switch off appliances when not in use and stagger the operation of high-powered appliances. Those equipped with smart meters can utilize the SEB cares mobile app and web portal to track electricity consumption and identify opportunities to optimize usage.

Sarawak Energy reiterated its dedication to preserving a reliable electricity supply while safeguarding reservoir levels throughout the extended dry period, working alongside the Sarawak Government and relevant agencies.
