Pak-China healthcare cooperation offers major opportunities

LAHORE: Healthcare stands poised to become a cornerstone of Pakistan-China economic collaboration, as highlighted by Adeel Munawar, Commercial Ambassador of the Pakistan-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI). Munawar outlined a range of promising avenues, from joint ventures and technology transfer to investment in state-of-the-art medical facilities, that could propel both nations forward.

China’s rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, digital healthcare, biotechnology, medical equipment, and research could serve as a catalyst for Pakistan’s healthcare modernization, Munawar argued. He stressed the importance of converting the long-standing strategic partnership between the two countries into practical, commercially viable projects through collaborative initiatives.

Munawar identified several sectors ripe for cooperation, including telemedicine, AI-based diagnostics, digital health platforms, smart hospitals, and remote consultations, which could dramatically expand access to quality medical care, especially in remote and underserved regions. He underscored the potential for stronger ties among hospitals, universities, research institutions, technology firms, and healthcare professionals from Pakistan and China, noting that such linkages could bolster knowledge exchange, skill development, and innovation.

Key areas for Chinese investment and joint ventures, Munawar pointed out, encompass medical equipment manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, healthcare IT, biotechnology, hospital management, and advanced medical technologies. He urged that healthcare cooperation transcend conventional institutional ties to foster commercially sustainable partnerships, leveraging Chinese expertise, resources, and capital while capitalizing on Pakistan’s local market insights and human capital.

Munawar also advocated for intensified collaboration in telemedicine, artificial intelligence, precision medicine, and medical research, underlining that such cooperation could help advance Sustainable Development Goal 3, which prioritizes improving health and well-being worldwide.
