Norway’s King Harald died at age of 89 after more than 3decades on throne

Norway’s King Harald V, who ruled with a reform-minded approach for nearly three decades, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Oslo University Hospital. He had been admitted to the hospital on August 17, 2026, due to a bacterial infection in his blood. Harald, Europe’s oldest living monarch, had previously undergone hospitalization for an infection while on holiday in Malaysia, where he was fitted with a temporary pacemaker. He had also received a permanent pacemaker later that year.

The king's death occurs during a challenging period for the Norwegian royal family. Crown Princess Mette-Marit, his son Crown Prince Haakon's spouse, is facing criticism for her association with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Her son, Marius Hoiby, was found guilty of rape and domestic violence and sentenced to four years in prison. Mette-Marit underwent a successful lung transplant shortly after Marius's conviction and returned home to celebrate her silver wedding anniversary with Haakon in August.

King Harald, who was Norway's ceremonial head of state since 1991, was a popular figure among Norwegians. According to a February 2026 poll, his popularity stood at 9.2 out of 10, with Norwegians viewing him as the royal who best represented the Norwegian royal family. Throughout his reign, Harald modernized the ceremonial position of the monarch, often visiting disaster-stricken areas wearing rubber boots and well-worn jackets to offer his support.

Born on February 21, 1937, King Harald was the first royal heir to be born in Norway in almost 570 years. His marriage to commoner Sonja Haraldsen in 1968 broke tradition and followed a protracted disagreement with his father. King Harald died with over 60% support for the monarchy, according to a Norstat poll, and was known for his tolerance, openness, and love for nature, including spending a month deep in the Amazon jungle.
