New witness to take stand at Madlanga Commission

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria is set to hear testimony from a new witness on Friday morning. This comes as the inquiry continues to investigate allegations of criminality, political interference, and failures within law-enforcement agencies. Dr Godfrey Lebeya, the former head of the Hawks, provided testimony on Thursday.

He firmly denied any knowledge of murder accused Katiso “KT” Molefe or involvement in interfering with a police operation at his Sandton residence in December 2024. Lebeya will return to the commission on a date yet to be determined. In addition to his denial of any wrongdoing, he also shared his concerns about the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC).

Lebeya stated that he had previously reported allegations involving its former head, Andrea Johnson, to the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) and sought an independent prosecutor. Lebeya's testimony contributes to weeks of evidence already presented, focusing on the handling of investigations by IDAC and whether its processes might have been influenced by senior officials.
