Netflixs new Korean thriller is your next mystery obsession

Netflix's latest Korean thriller, Mousetrap, is a gripping new mystery series that has arrived on the streaming platform. Based on the 2017 Kakao Webtoon Field Mouse by Ludovico, this unsettling and high-octane thriller delves into the world of identity laundering. The story revolves around incognito novelist Je Moon-jae (Ryu Jun-yeol), who becomes the victim of a mysterious figure known as "The Rat" who has stolen his identity.

Moon-jae, who is described as a popular and enigmatic author, finds himself in a situation where he cannot open his phone or bank account with his own fingerprint, and people are moving into his apartment, claiming it was theirs. He has no medical records, no ID, and is reduced to a mere shadow of his former self. This abrupt change in his life forces him to embark on a journey to uncover the truth and regain control over his identity.

The series, directed by Kim Hong-sun (Project Wolf Hunting) and written by Lee Jae-gon (A Model Family), weaves its mystery through multiple storylines, involving a hardened detective, a trio of hitmen, and the elusive Rat. Ryu Jun-yeol delivers a powerful performance as Moon-jae, pushing himself to the limit in portraying the character's anxiety and helplessness.

While Mousetrap excels in its action sequences, techno score, and compelling mystery, it falls short in terms of female characters, with women being limited to one-line scenes, and some remaining off-screen. Despite this drawback, the series remains a strong thriller, combining action, mystery, and solid twists in a well-crafted narrative.
