Nepal's Only Billionaire Thinks Country's Flood Reconstruction Cost Could Reach $5 Billion

Nepal's only billionaire, Binod Chaudhary, chairman of the Chaudhary Group, estimates the country's reconstruction costs following devastating flash floods could reach $5 billion. Chaudhary, the country's first and only billionaire, warned that the final cost is still uncertain, but he believes it is plausible given the scale of destruction and rebuilding challenges in Nepal's treacherous Himalayan terrain.

The flash floods, which struck on August 26, destroyed villages, roads, bridges, and power infrastructure, leaving at least 469 dead and around 1,200 people missing. Chaudhary criticized Nepal's lack of preparedness for such disasters, stating that the death toll could climb as authorities assess the affected areas. The disaster has disrupted essential services and economic activity, putting pressure on the government to restore infrastructure and support impacted communities.

Chaudhary's company is working with the government and local authorities on emergency relief operations, including setting up relief camps and rehabilitation centers. Chaudhary expects his reconstruction efforts to exceed those made after Nepal's 2015 earthquake, which took seven to eight years to recover from. The remote and challenging Himalayan terrain will make rebuilding efforts a major financial and logistical challenge, potentially requiring years of coordinated investment before affected communities can fully recover.
