Nepal flood death toll reaches 469 as 977 remain out of contact

Kathmandu reports a grim update on the deadly floods in Nepal's Bhotekoshi region, with the death toll surging to 469, while 977 individuals remain missing. The disaster is believed to have been caused by an avalanche on a river that straddles the border between Nepal and China. Devastating effects of the floods include the destruction of homes, roads, hydropower facilities, and communication infrastructure along the riverbanks.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has recovered 469 bodies, primarily in Chitwan (178), Nawalparasi East (110), Gorkha (44), Nuwakot (37), Tanahun (28), Nawalparasi West (27), Dhading (23), and Rasuwa (12). Out of the 977 people still out of contact, 517 are foreign nationals. India reports 290 Indians still unaccounted for, the United States cites around 90 Americans, and China notes nearly 100 Chinese nationals missing.

In addition to the fatalities, 73 people have been injured, with the highest number in Rasuwa (43), Dhading (3), and Nuwakot (27). A total of 13,295 security personnel have been deployed for search, rescue, and relief efforts. So far, 3,253 people have been rescued, and helicopters have been utilized for evacuation and relief transportation.

Nepal's Prime Minister has appealed for assistance from individuals and organizations, urging them to coordinate with their respective district administrations before delivering relief materials. The government advises against uncoordinated private vehicle trips to the affected areas due to traffic congestion, which hinders the reach of ambulances and rescue teams to their destinations in a timely manner.
