Nepal flash floods: MFA in touch with families of affected S'poreans

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is monitoring the situation of Singaporeans impacted by the Nepal flash floods, according to a statement released on Aug. 27. The Singapore High Commission in New Delhi and the Singapore Embassy in Beijing are collaborating with Nepali and Chinese authorities to provide aid. The High Commission in New Delhi has sent a Crisis Response Team to Nepal to offer consular support to affected Singaporeans.

Nepali officials have warned that a blockage upstream on the Nepal-China border river could lead to another flood, so the MFA advises Singaporeans in the affected regions to stay alert, keep an eye on local news, and follow the guidance of local officials.

According to an earlier report, nine Singaporeans are confirmed missing after severe flash floods hit Nepal's border area with Tibet on Aug. 26. The Nepal Tourism Board reported on Aug. 27 that 644 travelers from various trekking and travel firms were listed as missing, with nine of them being Singaporeans. The board stated that the information is being confirmed and cross-referenced with travel agencies, guides, local authorities, and security agencies.

To stay updated, the MFA suggests that Singaporeans avoid affected areas, rivers, riverbanks, and low-lying zones. They can register with the MFA to receive notifications about the latest developments. Those requiring consular assistance can contact the Singapore High Commission in New Delhi, the Singapore Embassy in Beijing, or the MFA's 24-hour duty office. The Singapore Government is deeply saddened by the loss of life and extends its sympathies to the families of those who have passed away.
