Nepal and China resume flood rescue after lake threat eases, death toll tops 500

NUWAKOT, Nepal - Nepal and China have resumed flood rescue efforts suspended briefly due to concerns over an overflowing lake, according to the latest reports. The catastrophic flood on Wednesday claimed the lives of 547 people in Nepal and five in China's Tibet, with nearly 1,000 others missing in the two countries.

The torrent of rock, ice, mud, and debris was triggered by the glacier collapse and formed a lake, which continued to rise, eventually overflowing into rivers. On Friday, the lake's water level surged to 2.5 million cubic meters, surpassing the previous estimate of 1.5-2 million cubic meters and prompting the suspension of rescue operations for approximately three hours.

This surge prompted authorities in Nepal to issue warnings and warnings from Chinese officials, leading to a rapid resumption of rescue operations.
