NB8 parliament speakers condemn Russia's continuous missile, drone attacks on Ukrainian cities

Ukrainian forces may have utilized the new U.S. JDAM-LR missile during a strike on Russian command posts in occupied Donetsk, according to fragments of munitions posted online. The JDAM-LR, which boasts a range of about 555 kilometers, has a wing shape and attachment system similar to the fragments discovered in Donetsk. Russian occupation forces had claimed Ukrainian forces targeted one of the locations on August 26 using Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missiles.

However, the munitions in Donetsk bore the marking 6F8W7, belonging to Australian company Ferra Aerospace, a partner of Boeing in manufacturing JDAM-ER guided glide bombs. The JDAM-ER's maximum range of 75 kilometers is insufficient for a successful strike on Donetsk. Russian sources assert that Ukrainian forces employed the latest version of the munition, the jet-powered JDAM-LR, which was first tested in April 2026.

With its jet engines, the JDAM-LR transitions from the glide-bomb category to the cruise-missile category, and its maximum range extends to over 555 kilometers, exceeding the necessary distance to reach Donetsk. The missile employs the same wing kit as its predecessor, the JDAM-ER, and is attached to a 226.7-kilogram Mk-82 aerial bomb capable of destroying a four-story factory building in Donetsk.

The JDAM-LR utilizes inertial navigation and GPS guidance and can be launched from aircraft capable of deploying conventional JDAMs, including F-16s, MiG-29, and Su-27 fighter jets utilized by Ukraine. The confirmation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' usage of JDAM-LRs in the attack on occupied Donetsk remains uncertain, as the missiles have only recently entered serial production in the United States.

If employed, it is likely that Ukraine received a limited quantity, primarily for testing in modern combat conditions.
