Murkomen explains how new police uniform will be rolled out

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen provided insight into the government's plan for rolling out the new police uniform. Speaking at the police recruits' graduation parade in Nyeri County, Murkomen clarified that officers will not be forced to immediately discard their existing uniforms. He emphasized that the new attire should not be viewed as part of the broader police reforms being implemented.

Murkomen stated that the uniform change is merely one aspect of the ongoing reforms. The new attire aims to convey the image and identity that police officers wish to project. He also debunked rumors suggesting a mass swap of current uniforms, clarifying that the transition will follow the usual process where officers receive new uniforms over time.

The rollout will commence with the 10,000 officers graduating from training, gradually extending to all serving officers. Murkomen assured that the rollout would proceed as typical uniform exchanges take place. He noted that the uniform represents only a visible aspect of the broader police reforms, which encompass a wide range of issues.

The reforms also include a digital transformation, where the National Police Service plans to utilize data analytics and artificial intelligence to optimize officer deployment. This technology will analyze crime data to determine the areas needing more police presence. Murkomen added that digital OBs (Operations Bases) will facilitate crime reporting, allowing Kenyans to file reports from their offices or the location where incidents occur.
