Norwegian King Harald V, aged 89, passed away on Friday at 6:35 local time (4:35 GMT) at the National Hospital in Oslo, where he had been under care for eleven days, announced the Royal Household. Harald V peacefully passed away at Rikshospitalet on Friday, 28th August, at 6:35 AM, the Royal Household reported in a statement, alluding to the medical center where he was admitted on August 17th.

The Royal Household published a portrait of the deceased monarch on their website along with a portrait of the late king. On August 17th, Harald V was admitted to the National Hospital due to anemia, but his condition worsened on Thursday as his ailment turned into a blood infection. The health status of King Harald V remained under wraps from the Norwegian public, and many Oslo residents had already arrived that day to show their support for the monarch and to lay flowers in front of the Royal Palace.

At the Royal Palace, the royal flag flew at half-staff shortly after the news of the king's death became public. The news of his death was met with great grief among the country's authorities, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre acknowledged in statements released by the NTB agency that the monarch had demonstrated an unshakable faith in the Norwegian people.

Prime Minister Masud Gharahkhani of the Norwegian Parliament also expressed his grief, describing the Norwegian nation as being in mourning following Harald V's passing. Upon Harald V's death, it was announced that the government would convene an extraordinary session to proceed with the coronation of the new king, a responsibility falling to Haakon Magnus, Harald V's younger son and first in line to the throne.
