Missing Aussie makes contact as flood disaster worsens

Australian authorities are working to locate a woman who survived catastrophic flooding on the Nepal-China border. Sumi Adhikari, an Australian woman who was on a pilgrimage, made contact with her family after the flooding. Her husband, Kailash Mansowar, has traveled to Nepal to search for her. At least 38 Australians remain missing after an ice avalanche triggered the worst natural disaster in Nepal in over a decade.

Heavy rainfall continues to make rescue conditions difficult and unpredictable, with further severe flooding, landslides, and debris flows predicted. At least 489 people have died, while almost 1000 remain missing. The Australian government has sent a $5 million assistance package and humanitarian support, and plans to send additional personnel to the region.
