Meta has announced a new update for its Ray-Ban smart glasses aimed at closing the most obvious loophole that allows users to disable the privacy LED. In a recent update, Meta VP of AR Alex Himel explained on Threads that the upcoming release will "further block users from disabling the privacy LED." Previously, Meta targeted users who modified the hardware to disable the LED, but an easier workaround emerged – starting recording and then covering the LED.

This new update prevents the camera from recording if the LED is covered, effectively closing this loophole. The AI glasses' camera will now stop recording if the light is blocked during a recording. Meta is committed to rolling out updates to ensure the capture LED remains reliable, alerting bystanders when photos or videos are being captured.

While a small minority attempt to bypass these protections, Meta's efforts appear effective. The company's dedicated privacy page outlines measures to ensure user safety, including turning off glasses in sensitive spaces and noting that only the user can see photos and videos captured on the glasses. This update comes amid growing societal scrutiny on smart glasses, with Meta at the forefront of the conversation.
