Malaysia finish last in Hockey World Cup after penalty shootout loss

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's disappointing Hockey World Cup concluded with a last-place finish after a penalty shootout loss to debutant Wales in Wavre, Belgium, today. The Speedy Tigers emerged as the only team to go without a win in their six matches, failing to secure a quarter-final appearance they had targeted. Wales' Francis Benjamin opened the scoring in the 29th minute, followed by Malaysia's Faizal Saari equalizing in the 41st minute.

Akhimullah Anuar Esook put Malaysia ahead in the 52nd minute, but Wales evened the score through Liam Barker a minute later. In the subsequent penalty shootout, Wales' Jolyon Morgan and Jack Pritchard converted their efforts, while Fitri Saari was Malaysia's lone scorer. Wales goalkeeper Toby Reynolds-Cotterill thwarted attempts from Nik Aiman Nik Rozemi, Faizal Saari, Arai Aizad Abu Kamal, and Shello Silverius.

Wales' national team comprised non-professional players who had to fundraise privately for their World Cup debut. Forward Akhimullah suggested that Malaysia could have triumphed if they converted their early chances. Coach Brendon Carolan pointed out that Malaysia conceded soft goals and struggled to convert opportunities from penalty corners.

He emphasized the need to rectify mistakes before the upcoming Asian Games, scheduled within three weeks. Carolan stressed that the focus now is on strengthening defense and becoming more clinical before the Asian Games. Despite some positive results, including draws against South Africa and France, Wales' superior ranking meant that a gold medal and qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics seemed improbable.
