Major tech companies call for defensive surge to defeat AI-driven hacks

Major tech corporations, comprising OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon, have joined forces with over 100 additional entities like Broadcom, Capital One, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, General Motors, IBM, Mastercard, Oracle, Robinhood, Shopify, and Visa to issue a call for a comprehensive defensive response against the looming threat of AI-driven cyberattacks. In a joint letter released on Thursday, the companies emphasized the urgent need to fortify the digital landscape before the AI threat amplifies.

The letter warns that AI-enabled cyberattacks are set to proliferate exponentially in the coming months as global AI models grow increasingly potent. As such, the tech giants are urging governmental and industry leaders to marshal their technological resources and expertise to counter this imminent threat. The letter advocates for the acceleration of trusted access programs, which grant select entities access to advanced AI models prior to wider public distribution, and for all organizations to prioritize cyber defense at the highest echelons of leadership.

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the White House have yet to respond to inquiries regarding the matter. The White House's handling of CISA has been a subject of controversy, particularly under the Trump administration, which significantly downsized the agency's staff, resulting in a third reduction in personnel last year.

Meanwhile, the growing capabilities of AI are being leveraged by malicious actors, as evidenced by the recent deployment of large language models by rogue entities to infiltrate organizations worldwide.

In June, the Five Eyes intelligence alliance - consisting of the U.S., Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand - released a rare joint statement cautioning that the AI revolution is set to fundamentally reshape the field of cybersecurity.
