Kong Haakon VIII: «Alt for Norge»

Kong Haakon VIII, the newly crowned monarch of Norway, formally announced his chosen name and pledged to uphold the same ideals as his predecessors during an extraordinary state council meeting. In a press release, the government expressed their condolences to the Norwegian people for the loss of their late king and their gratitude for their support during this difficult time.

The new king and his regency met in the extraordinary state council at 11:30 AM on Friday morning, with the new crown princess Ingrid Alexandra also present. After the state council, the new king's car and the crown princess' car arrived at the palace at 11:00 AM and 11:20 AM, respectively. The government and state council members will later sign condolence protocols for King Harald V. The Norwegian parliament president, Masud Gharahkhani, will deliver a memorial speech at the Storting at 12:30 PM on Friday.

The government stated that they would gather at the palace at 11:30 AM for the extraordinary state council. Earlier in the day, during a government conference, Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed the government's sympathy and gratitude on behalf of all Norwegians. He thanked King Harald for his lifelong service and contributions to the nation and wished his family all the best.

The president of the Storting also met on Friday to decide on the date of the new king's inauguration. The government has declared a national mourning period from today until King Harald's funeral. There are no clear rules for the national mourning period, which is a personal matter and may have different needs and wishes related to marking the passing of King Harald.

The government encourages individuals, families, local communities, workplaces, organizations, and the nation to find their own ways to show grief and participation during these challenging times. The parliament building's flag will also be flown at half-staff on Friday.
