Judge blocks Pentagon blacklist of Anthropic as supply chain risk

In a significant legal victory, a US court has blocked the Pentagon from barring artificial intelligence (AI) specialist Anthropic from securing military contracts. Judge Rita Lin deemed the classification of Anthropic's developers as a national security risk in her ruling on Thursday (local time) as illegal and unjustified. She stated, "Mere reference to national security is not a free pass to punish government critics and exact revenge on them."

The US Department of Defense had previously labeled Anthropic as a risk to its supply chain, responding to the company's refusal to provide its AI model for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons.

Anthropic argued that AI models for autonomous weapons systems were not reliable enough and that domestic surveillance would infringe on citizens' rights. The company filed a lawsuit in March, accusing the government of violating its freedom of speech and right to a fair trial. Anthropic's exclusion could cost the company billions of dollars, according to its own statements.

The US Justice Department countered that the company's refusal could endanger military systems during ongoing operations and emphasized that private companies should not restrict military actions. The classification was based on the company's refusal to adhere to contract conditions, not its views on AI safety.
