James Vowles addresses Alex Albon-Carlos Sainz collision at Dutch GP

Williams team principal James Vowles has acknowledged that his team shares some responsibility for the late-race collision between Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz at the Dutch Grand Prix. During a hectic race won by McLaren's Lando Norris, the two Williams drivers collided while vying for positions outside the points. In Williams' post-race analysis, Vowles stated that both drivers bear some blame for the incident.

He emphasized that it's challenging to assign full blame to one driver, but both share culpability. The issue arose from the pitwall's decision to leave Sainz on worn tires during a virtual safety car period. Williams believed that stopping Sainz would have left them behind Albon and Franco, negating any potential overtaking opportunities.

However, this maneuver also put both cars in a position to fight for no points on track, a scenario Williams should have avoided. Albon retired from the race after the collision, while Sainz finished 16th. Sainz received a 10-second penalty, which he considered fair given his worn tires, struggling car, and the race's pace. Sainz described the incident as a surprise, as he had little confidence in his brakes after hitting the inside wall at Turn 1.
