Itauma battles Hrgović for IBF heavyweight title

British-Nigerian heavyweight contender Moses Itauma faces off against Filip Hrgovic for the vacant IBF heavyweight championship on Saturday at the O2 Arena in London. Growing animosity between the two boxers has escalated as the fight approaches. Itauma, a 14-fight undefeated professional, boasts 12 knockouts, including a first-round stoppage of former world title challenger Dillian Whyte.

Winning would make him the second-youngest heavyweight world champion in history, just behind Mike Tyson. Hrgovic, a bronze medallist from the 2016 Rio Olympics, taunted Itauma ahead of the bout, labeling him a "kid" with limited experience. However, Itauma admitted that Hrgovic's comments were affecting his focus, as he dismissed Hrgovic's attempts to intimidate him as evidence of the Croatian's lack of self-confidence.

Hrgovic further belittled Itauma by omitting him from his personal top-five list of heavyweight contenders, which included Oleksandr Usyk, Daniel Dubois, Agit Kabayel, and Tyson Fury. Despite the criticism, Hrgovic insisted that his experience would be the deciding factor in the bout, claiming that the boxing world was undervaluing his abilities.

Itauma, however, emphasized that the vacant title had not altered his motivation for the fight, stating that his goal remains to defeat Hrgovic as much as it did before the championship belt was at stake. The fight's significance was heightened after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the IBF title and Frank Sanchez agreed to step aside, propelling Itauma into the biggest fight of his career.
