Iraq arrests four over killing of policemen in Baghdad clashes

Four individuals have been arrested in Iraq for the killing of two police officers in Baghdad, as the government strives to assert control before a deadline to disarm Iran-linked militias. Brig Gen Hisham Muhammad Talla and Khalid Abbas Lafta were killed on Thursday while clearing the Dora district of squatters. The incident underscores the issue of unauthorized housing in Iraq, particularly in the Dora neighbourhood, which has been linked to illegal construction.

The government suspects the attackers may have used heavy weapons and militia ties, though these claims remain unconfirmed. Interior Ministry spokesman Maj Gen Miqdad Miri stated that four arrests have been made, with warrants issued for several suspects and the pursuit of others ongoing. The death of a senior officer highlights the dangers law enforcement faces when confronting armed settlers and emphasizes the need for policy reforms to manage urban land disputes and protect property rights.

The Dora area, previously owned by Saddam Hussein and seized by militias in 2003, has been the site of armed confrontations and is known for illegal land seizures. Prime Minister Ali Al Zaidi vowed September 30 as the deadline for armed groups to surrender their weapons, a crucial deadline tied to the withdrawal of US troops and Iraq's sovereignty.
