Influential humanists: These are the winners of the Goethe Medal 2026

The Goethe Medal 2026 was awarded on August 28 in Weimar to three influential humanists who have made significant contributions to cultural bridges between Germany and partner countries. Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, Italian literary translator Anita Raja, and Greek theater director and actor Prodromos Tsinikoris were recognized for their outstanding work.

Pärt, born in Estonia in 1935, is a pioneering figure in contemporary classical music, known for his minimalist and contemplative compositions. Works like "Für Alina" and "Spiegel im Spiegel" have made him one of the most performed living composers worldwide. Forced to flee after the Soviet occupation, Pärt settled in Germany, where his creativity flourished. He has since returned to Estonia, where he continues to compose and live.

Italian-born Raja is a celebrated translator and librarian. She translated major German works into Italian, establishing a profound connection between Italian and German literature. Her translations made authors like Christa Wolf widely appreciated in Italy. Raja also founded the Biblioteca Europea in Rome, emphasizing European culture and international cooperation.

Tsinikoris, born in modern-day Greece to Greek labor migrants, is a leading voice in contemporary Greek and European theater. His works explore themes such as migration, social inequality, and historical perspectives. Productions like "In the middle of the street" and "Clean City" have shed light on social issues, while "96%" critically examines the Holocaust of Jews of Thessaloniki.

Tsinikoris has directed theater in Athens and co-curated the International Forest Festival in Thessaloniki, promoting Greek culture and arts in Germany.
