Indore To Bhopal: Gen Z Gives College Canteens A Café-Style Makeover

Indore and Bhopal's college students are reimagining the traditional canteen experience with a modern café-style makeover. In Indore, the city's strong street-food culture has influenced the transformation, with classic dishes like poha-jalebi, samosas, and kachoris still popular, but now shared alongside momos, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, cold coffee, shakes, and fries.

Student Aradhya Verma from Medicaps University reflects that the nostalgic taste of poha and jalebi remains unchanged, no matter the influx of new cafés. Similarly, at A Sangeeta University, food has become a social media focal point, with students like Ashiti Batham visiting primarily for the perfect Instagram picture. Prestige Institute of Management and Research exemplifies this trend, featuring momos alongside traditional poha on its menu, symbolizing a new generation's culinary identity.

At Acropolis Institute and IPS Academy, canteen corners have become spaces for social media content creation, assignments, and informal meetings over cold coffee and fries. Bhopal, too, is experiencing a similar evolution, with traditional samosas, kachoris, patties, and chai gradually giving way to paneer rolls, French fries, fried rice, and South Indian dishes at the MANIT campus.

Bhopal School of Social Science and LNCT students can now opt for noodles, bread rolls, dhokla, sandwiches, alongside the classic samosas. Maggi, white sauce pasta, and Chinese dishes are also popular at JLU, with momos, pizzas, and waffles adding a global twist. The shift extends beyond menus, as students view food breaks as opportunities for campus exploration, discussions on technology, careers, and innovation.

Across both cities, the college canteen is evolving into a social and cultural hub, where food, ambience, convenience, conversations, and content intertwine to create a distinct Gen Z experience.
