India's Javelin buy: What US anti-tank missile adds to army's arsenal

Indian officials have announced plans to acquire the US-developed Javelin anti-tank missile system, marking a significant enhancement to the Indian Army's capabilities. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed the acquisition during a Friday announcement, emphasizing its importance for the defense alliance between the two nations. Gor also hinted at potential co-production opportunities between Indian and US defense industries, further strengthening the partnership.

The Indian Army formally signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LoA) for the Javelin system through the US Foreign Military Sales process. Specific quantities and monetary values have not been disclosed, but the deal is seen as part of a broader expansion of defense cooperation between the US and India. This includes a 10-year defense framework signed last year and growing efforts to boost defense-industrial collaboration.

The FGM-148 Javelin is a man-portable guided missile system designed to neutralize heavily armored vehicles like tanks, but it can also be used against bunkers, buildings, and various battlefield targets. The system is composed of a missile housed in a disposable launch tube and a reusable Command Launch Unit (CLU), equipped with day and thermal imaging for target detection and engagement.

Once the operator activates the Javelin, the passive imaging-infrared seeker autonomously guides the missile to its target without continuous control.

Operational from 2003, the Javelin has been deployed extensively in Iraq and Afghanistan, with over 5,000 engagements credited to the system. Its recent surge in international attention coincides with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, where Ukrainian forces utilized Javelins against Russian armored forces.
