India women’s team get cash reward for historic 5th place finish at World Cup

The Indian women's hockey team has been awarded a significant cash prize for their historic fifth-place finish at the Hockey World Cup 2026. According to Hockey India, each player will receive ₹2,00,000, while each support staff member will receive ₹1,00,000. This marks India's best performance in the tournament since the inaugural edition in 1974, when they finished fourth.

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey announced the rewards on his X account, describing the achievement as a historic one that deserves special recognition. The Indian team demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout the tournament, defeating China, England, and Australia while holding draws with higher-ranked sides. Their final victory over Germany secured their fifth-place position.

Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne emphasized that this accomplishment will provide a significant confidence boost for the players as they prepare for the upcoming Asian Games in September-October. The coach expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, acknowledging their historic achievement and noting that they have rewritten hockey history. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining focus on the team's own game during the Asian Games, rather than fixating on opponents.
