India captain Gill puts positive spin on drawn Colombo Test

India captain Shubman Gill found reasons to be positive after India's 1-0 series victory over Sri Lanka in Colombo, despite the drawn second Test leaving the team disheartened. India took control of the first Test in Galle and were poised for a whitewash after strong performances on the first four days. However, Sri Lanka's Sonal Dinusha staged a remarkable comeback on the final day to secure a thrilling draw.

The loss represented a missed opportunity for India to climb above Bangladesh in the World Test Championship standings and build a buffer ahead of their upcoming series against New Zealand and Australia. Gill acknowledged the credit due to Sri Lanka, stating, "It’s disappointing obviously. We hoped for a win but we also have to give credit to where credit is due."

Currently positioned fifth in the table, India requires a win in six of their remaining seven Tests to secure control of their fate in the race for the WTC final. India will face New Zealand in November for a two-Test series before hosting WTC leaders Australia in a pivotal five-match contest early next year. Despite the setback, Gill saw encouragement in the performances of younger players.

Spinner Manav Suthar emerged as the leading wicket-taker in his first Test series, while Devdutt Padikkal's twin centuries indicated his potential as a reliable number three. Dhruv Jurel provided stability in the middle order and added another wicketkeeping option.
