IIT Hyderabad to help Railways ease passenger rush at Secunderabad, Lingampalli stations

Indian Railways is collaborating with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad to analyze passenger traffic and movement at Secunderabad and Lingampalli railway stations. This initiative aims to alleviate congestion and streamline passenger flow within these stations, which are classified under the administrative domain of South Central Railway (SCR).

Secunderabad station, situated in the twin-city region of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, is a major hub with 10 platforms, handling approximately two lakh passengers daily and accommodating around 210 train services, carrying about 84,000 passengers. Lingampalli station, another significant rail terminal in the Hyderabad and Secunderabad region, sees over 20,000 passengers per day, catering to more than 30 pairs of express trains and 50 MMTS services.

The zonal railway has enlisted IIT Hyderabad to conduct comprehensive traffic assessment studies at these stations, focusing on enhancing passenger dispersal, traffic circulation, and multimodal connectivity. The study will delve into various aspects, including vehicular and pedestrian movement, access to the stations, traffic circulation, parking areas, and pick-up and drop-off arrangements.

Key technologies such as drone surveys, AI-based CCTV analysis, passenger field surveys, and traffic simulations will be employed to identify bottlenecks and suggest improvements. The findings from this study are expected to yield data-driven solutions aimed at bolstering passenger safety, accessibility, and the overall flow of traffic around Secunderabad and Lingampalli stations.
