IISER Pune students begin indefinite sit-in, seek action on mental health and academic pressure

On August 27, students at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune began an indefinite sit-in protest to demand action on several issues, including the suspension of the general secretary of the Student Council, Raj Bagwe, and concerns over mental health infrastructure. The protest came after the death of a student on campus, with police yet to determine the cause of death.

Raj Bagwe had been suspended for one year, later reduced to six months, following an incident of an alleged strip search of students on campus. Students accused Bagwe of raising safety concerns, which led to his severe disciplinary action. In response, the students called for a relaxation of academic requirements, an overhaul of mental health services with increased counselors, a rollback of gender-based segregation, and no disciplinary or administrative retaliation against students advocating for systemic change.

The indefinite sit-in was described as continuing "indefinitely till a satisfactory resolution is reached." The institute responded to the protest, stating that Bagwe's suspension was the result of a thorough investigation into complaints received. The appeal against the suspension led to a reduction in the action taken. The institute emphasized its commitment to a safe and secure environment for all residents, citing stricter implementation of hostel rules after safety concerns from girls residing in Hostel 3.

To accommodate new students joining in August 2026, some common spaces in hostels were converted into residential rooms. In response, the institute opened up the dining complex on the ground and first floor as a co-working, sitting space for all students, ensuring safety. The institute has two full-time counselors and plans to hire one to two additional full-time counselors for mental well-being support.
