IAF Announces Flagship 'Sekhon Air Force Marathon 2026' Across 7 Cities; Registrations Open In Mumbai

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has launched online registrations for the Sekhon Indian Air Force Marathon 2026, also known as SIM-26. This mass-participation event is set to take place on October 4 and will be conducted simultaneously in seven major cities, with the Mumbai edition led by the Headquarters Maintenance Command. The marathon aims to honor Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, who bravely defended Srinagar Airfield during the 1971 war and is the only recipient of India's highest military decoration from the Air Force.

The main objective of SIM-26 is to create a nationwide movement that promotes discipline, mental strength, and physical fitness among Indian youth. The event aligns with the union government's Fit India Movement, which encourages citizens to adopt healthier lifestyles. Defence officials emphasized that the marathon's importance has been heightened due to recent military engagements, particularly Operation Sindoor, which showcased the operational readiness, tactical synergy, and resolve of the armed forces in protecting national sovereignty.

The Mumbai leg of the marathon will commence from Cross Maidan in South Mumbai, offering timed categories for both competitive athletes and amateur runners. Participants registering for the 21.1km half marathon will need to pay Rs 2,000, while Defence personnel can register for Rs 1,500. Other categories available include 5K Run and 10K Run. Organizers anticipate thousands of civilian runners, veterans, armed forces personnel, and fitness enthusiasts lining the streets of Mumbai to participate in this event.
