HS Standouts: Calvin McCoy Greer High School

Greer High School senior Calvin McCoy, a standout running back, follows a simple motto of "Earned, not given," according to his Head Football Coach Will Young. This mantra has guided McCoy's journey from playing tackle as a bigger, angrier teenager to becoming one of the Upstate's most productive running backs. McCoy's transformation reflects his hard work and dedication, both on and off the field.

After beginning his career on the offensive line, McCoy found his home in the backfield, stepping up when needed. This leadership role helped McCoy realize his potential and the power of perseverance. In his breakout junior season, McCoy rushed for over 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns, despite recovering from a concussion that occurred during his sophomore year. His off-season commitment to working out five days a week contributed to his continued improvement.

Greer head coach Will Young has noticed a significant change in McCoy, both on and off the field. Young describes McCoy as a more mature player and a stronger leader within the program. McCoy aims to become more independent this senior season, emphasizing personal growth alongside athletic success.
