Hong Kong lawyer warns against doxxing after AIA staff suspended over mall brawl

A lawyer in Hong Kong has cautioned internet users against revealing personal information about others on social media, warning that it could constitute the criminal offense of doxxing. This warning came after an insurance company suspended an employee suspected of being involved in a brawl at a Kwun Tong shopping center. The employee in question was identified through a viral video and subsequent online exposure of their personal details, including their name, profession, social media account information, and the location of their workplace.

The incident involved three women who were charged with fighting in a public place. The suspected AIA staff member's mother was also charged with an additional count of common assault. A viral video captured the brawl at APM mall in Kwun Tong, leading to widespread sharing of the individuals' faces and personal details on social media platforms.

Lawyer Vincent Chong Yip-fung emphasized the risk of committing doxxing by disclosing personal information, stating that it could cause psychological harm to the individuals involved. He advised social media users to refrain from sharing personal details, stating that law enforcement will handle the incident. The South China Morning Post has reached out to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data for further comment on this matter.
