Hokkaido Univ. student dies after being splashed with hydrofluoric acid

SAPPORO -- A graduate student at Hokkaido University passed away after being splashed with highly toxic hydrofluoric acid in an accident at the School of Science on August 27. The university expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a valuable student's life in this tragic incident, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring a safe environment for educational and research activities.

The accident occurred in the morning of August 27 in a building within the School of Science in Sapporo's Kita Ward. One graduate student was severely injured, while another graduate student and an undergraduate student who came to assist the victim suffered minor injuries. All three affected individuals were promptly taken to a hospital.

Upon arrival, it was confirmed that the graduate student who was splashed with hydrofluoric acid had succumbed to their injuries. The other two students, however, were reported to be in good health and returned home afterward. The university statement expressed their sincere prayers for the deceased student's soul and extended the deepest condolences to their bereaved family.
