Hisense U7SG vs TCL QM7L: We tested both mid-range TVs and one is better for most people

This year, buyers of mid-range TVs have a few enticing choices to consider. After testing the Hisense U7SG and TCL QM7L, it appears that the QM7L offers the best overall performance for most consumers. Despite being priced slightly higher, the TCL QM7L stands out due to its use of TCL's Super Quantum Dot (SQD) technology, which provides a wider range of saturated colors compared to the U7SG's traditional quantum-dot display.

Similarities between the two TVs include their size options (55, 65, 75, 85, and 98-inch), both offering HDR and ATSC 3.0 support, and the same number of HDMI ports (four total). However, there are key differences worth noting. The U7SG supports HDMI 2.1 on all four inputs, allowing for 4K content at 165Hz and up to 165Hz with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). In contrast, only two of the QM7L's HDMI inputs support 4K at 120Hz and up to 144Hz.

Both TVs come with sturdy plastic construction and a pedestal-style stand, which is convenient for narrow furniture. The QM7L's stand can be adjusted in two height configurations, making it easier to accommodate taller soundbars without obstructing the screen. Both TVs feature backlit remote controls, adding to the viewing experience in a dark room.

In terms of performance, both TVs deliver bright, colorful pictures during HDR content, with highlight brightness exceeding 2,000 nits. The U7SG maintains a slight edge in SDR brightness (185 nits vs. 196 nits) and offers a slightly better Delta-E score (3 vs. 2.6) for color accuracy. However, the QM7L excels in HDR brightness (2,866 nits vs. 2,270 nits) and has broader color coverage in P3 and Rec.2020 color spaces.

In summary, while both the Hisense U7SG and TCL QM7L offer bright, colorful pictures at a mid-range price, the TCL QM7L is the better choice for most consumers due to its superior HDR performance and broader color coverage.
