Health experts raise alarm over rising antimicrobial resistance in Africa

Health experts have sounded the alarm over growing cases of resistance to antibiotics in Africa, urging for a coordinated approach to tackle the issue. Scientists expressed worry over the increasing transmission of diseases between animals and humans due to antimicrobial resistance. This concern was highlighted during the inauguration of the International Center for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) regional office in Nairobi by health researchers from various African countries.

Dr Meshack Ndirangu, the Amref Africa Kenya Country Director, emphasized the need for a multi-sectoral approach to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR). He stressed the importance of collaboration across sectors such as agriculture and health in overcoming this challenge. Ndirangu pointed out that safeguarding the veterinary sector is crucial in reversing AMR, as it involves both humans and animals.

He reiterated that Amref has incorporated AMR into health services because resistance does not remain confined to a single sector; it spreads across people, animals, and the environment.

The health expert also pointed out that antifungal agents used for spraying vegetables significantly contribute to the spread of antimicrobial resistance and called for enhanced coordination between relevant stakeholders. Furthermore, Dr Ndirangu advocated for the development of a national policy on antibiotic use within the ministries of Health, Agriculture, and Livestock Development to ensure coordinated treatment strategies.

Dr Allan Azegele, Director of Veterinary Services in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, welcomed the partnership with the ICARS regional office. He highlighted the importance of joint efforts in finding solutions to antimicrobial resistance and challenged health researchers across Africa to lead the fight against AMR and curb the misuse of antibiotics.
