Gov't finalizes Muan County area as site for Gwangju air base relocation

The government selection committee announced on Friday that Muan County will serve as the site for the relocation of a military air base currently based in the neighboring city of Gwangju. This decision, made by the committee under the leadership of the defense ministry, clears the path for an accelerated development of a major semiconductor cluster in the region.

The committee's final designation of Muan County as the new air base location was made following a meeting that included municipal government officials, as confirmed by the ministry in a release. The relocation of the 1st Fighter Wing to Muan County marks a significant step forward in the Gwangju base relocation project, paving the way for a rapid implementation process in coordination with relevant agencies.

This decision also paves the way for the government to accelerate its plans to build a vast semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) cluster in Gwangju and its surrounding areas, a 800 trillion-won (US$582.9 billion) project in partnership with Samsung Electronics Co. and SK hynix Inc.
