Gov’t amending procurement law to prioritise Ghana-made products — Mahama

Ghana's government is implementing changes to the Public Procurement Act, aiming to prioritize locally manufactured goods. President John Mahama revealed that a schedule will be added to the Procurement Act, listing licensed Ghanaian products and their respective manufacturers. Public institutions, including schools and hospitals, will be required to procure directly from these local companies and factories.

The President emphasized the importance of using public procurement to support domestic manufacturing, stating that government agencies would no longer need to engage in competitive tendering if a locally produced alternative is available. The policy aims to ensure that government expenditure directly supports local businesses and creates a guaranteed market for Ghanaian manufacturers.

The announcement was made at the inauguration of Northshore Apparel in Savelugu, where Mahama challenged the company to expand its production capacity to include uniforms and protective equipment for Ghana's security services. He also highlighted the potential for local manufacturing of uniforms, boots, and protective gear, citing the example of the Kumasi Shoe Factory, which had been undermined by a preference for imported products during his previous administration.
