Gladys Knight Shares Statement After Onstage Behavior Sparks Concern

Gladys Knight, the legendary soul singer, has addressed recent concerns about her onstage behavior that have raised questions about cognitive decline. At 82 years old, Knight has been touring regularly, but there have been reports of her missing cues and appearing disoriented on stage. While this behavior is not consistent, it has sparked discussions about her well-being and whether she is being exploited by those around her.

Recently, a Reddit thread brought attention to these concerns, with some suggesting Knight may be experiencing cognitive decline. In July, she performed at the Hollywood Bowl with Motown veteran Smokey Robinson, but Billboard critic Paul Grein noted that she struggled during the show, relying heavily on backup singers. Videos from recent concerts show Knight being guided around the stage and occasionally standing aside to watch her backup singers take the lead.

Despite these reports, Knight has stated in a social media post that she plans to ease into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of her career and life. She mentioned spending time with her husband and grandbabies, as well as looking forward to performing for fans on the road.

Knight's husband and manager, William McDowell, told TMZ that no one would force him to deny his wife's well-being, but that she simply wants to sing. He also revealed that they are building a venue in North Carolina, near their home, so she can continue performing without extensive travel.

In 2016, Knight's son, Shanga Hankerson, had previously accused McDowell of elder abuse, alleging that his mother was struggling with dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Hankerson had sued McDowell in 2016 to have his mother's name removed from his Gladys Knight's Chicken And Waffles restaurant. The latest developments raise questions about the singer's current state and future plans.
