German unemployment rises slightly less than expected in August

In August, the number of unemployed individuals in Germany increased by a smaller margin than anticipated, according to data from the labour office. The seasonally adjusted unemployment figure climbed by 4,000, reaching 2.996 million, slightly lower than the estimated 5,000 rise. The jobless rate, which remained unchanged at 6.4%, remained steady despite the slight increase in the number of unemployed people.

Throughout August, the labour market continued to exhibit minimal momentum, beyond the typical seasonal fluctuations, stated labour office head Andrea Nahles. This prolongs a subdued trend observed in recent months. Unemployment figures typically rise in July due to the summer break, and this has been exacerbated by a somewhat sluggish economy.

However, recent indications of robust economic growth may have a beneficial effect on the labour market. A survey conducted by the Ifo economic institute revealed that job cuts slowed down in August. Additionally, the institute's key business climate index experienced a more significant increase than expected in August, driven by stronger exports and industrial production.

In total, 656,000 job vacancies were registered with the labour office in August, 25,000 more than a year ago.
