Eldas MP Adan Keynan lauds 2010 Constitution, calls for targeted amendments

Eldas Member of Parliament Adan Keynan has praised Kenya's 2010 Constitution for its transformative impact on the relationship between the State and citizens, particularly in historically marginalized regions. Speaking on a local radio station on August 28, 2026, Keynan highlighted how the Constitution has opened up opportunities for communities in Northern Kenya that had long faced challenges such as marginalization, profiling, and limited access to essential services.

As a lawmaker involved in the drafting and promulgation of the Constitution, Keynan noted that it has helped address many of the historical issues affecting the region, including restricted access to education, roads, and other basic services. He emphasized that the document represents a continuation of the "new dawn" for these communities, signifying a significant turning point in their historical exclusion from Kenya's development process.

While the MP commended the Constitution's achievements, especially for pastoralist communities and other marginalized groups, he cautioned that it should not be considered a static document. Keynan argued that like any human-made framework, the Constitution must adapt to changing societal needs and lessons learned from its implementation.

He anticipated that Kenyans would engage in discussions about areas requiring amendment, while urging caution against undermining the broader gains made since 2010. The MP's comments come as the nation reflects on the Constitution's implementation over the past 16 years, with ongoing questions about the full realization of its provisions.

Keynan also offered insights into Kenya's political environment ahead of the 2027 General Election, describing Kenyans as a democratic and resilient people increasingly willing to express their political views within the law. He noted that while the political atmosphere in Kenya can sometimes appear confrontational due to the openness of citizens, the country must guard against an emerging culture of political intimidation and violence.

Keynan affirmed that Kenya is generally on the right trajectory despite facing domestic and global challenges, highlighting ongoing reforms in health, housing, and education as steps toward addressing long-standing issues.
