Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo spreads to 2 new health zones with a total of 60 areas now affected

The Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo has expanded to include two additional health zones, Biena and Manguredjipa, bringing the total to 60 areas affected, according to recent government statistics released on Friday. The case fatality rate in these new zones is notably higher than the overall rate of 48%, at 69%, due to factors such as delayed response efforts.

As of the latest data, the outbreak has recorded 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths. The rapid spread of the disease, which has outpaced containment efforts, is attributed to insecurity, displacement, a healthcare workers' strike, and intense population movements. The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern that the outbreak could surpass the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak, which was the deadliest on record, with over 11,000 deaths.

Doctors Without Borders has responded by opening a new treatment center in Beni, North Kivu, to expedite patient care and support health authorities' containment efforts. While the majority of cases are concentrated in northeastern Ituri province, North Kivu has seen a particularly high Ebola fatality rate. The Congolese government has begun vaccinating healthcare workers and other frontline personnel with the Ervebo vaccine, while clinical trials are underway to develop a vaccine for the rare Bundibugyo virus causing the current outbreak.

Efforts to control the outbreak, including public gathering restrictions, social distancing, and airport closures, have disrupted daily life in the affected provinces, particularly Ituri, a region plagued by rebel violence. The government has implemented some measures, such as installing health and sanitary equipment, but advocates argue more needs to be done to build community trust.

Neighboring Uganda has declared itself free of Ebola, but the risk of further cross-border spread remains, with the Central African Republic now considered the highest risk country for spillover, followed by South Sudan.
