Durban yachtsman scoops sailor of the year award

Thomas Funke, a seasoned sailor from Durban, has been named the South African Sailor of the Year for 2025 by SA Sailing. The prestigious Owen Aisher Trophy is bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to yachting in the country. Funke, who is 44 years old, has been instrumental in encouraging young sailors and currently serves as Rear Commodore of Youth at Point Yacht Club. He is also well-known in competitive sailing, participating in various classes both locally and internationally.

Funke's love for sailing began at a young age when his father introduced him to the sport in 1990. He has since remained dedicated to the sport, particularly enjoying racing 505s for their speed and adrenaline. Last year, Funke and his son, Kai, competed in offshore events in Durban, finishing third overall in the Marriott Mirror World Champs and first in the African Champs. Funke also represented South Africa at the 505 World Championships in the UK, where he secured a 32nd place finish among a fleet of 90 sailors.

When accepting the award, Funke expressed his gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the support of his family and brother. He highlighted Durban's exceptional sailing conditions and announced a bid to host the 505 World Championships in Durban, with a confirmation date to be set. Funke is also preparing to organize the Mirror KZN Regionals sailing event on October 17 and 18.
