Duo sentenced to 10 years’ jail, two strokes in Kuching for sexually assaulting teen girl

KUCHING (Aug 28): The Sessions Court has handed down a 10-year prison sentence and six strokes of the cane to a 22-year-old oddjobber and a 20-year-old cook for sexually assaulting a teenage girl. Daniel Arrazy Salmi Abdullah received an additional three-year penalty for possessing child sexual abuse material. Both men confessed guilt to their crimes under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

The oddjobber sexually assaulted the 16-year-old in a house at 1am on May 20, while the cook, an Indonesian national, assaulted her in a hostel room in Serian at 9.30am earlier this month. The victim reported the assaults to the police, leading to their arrests. Police discovered nine videos of child sexual abuse on the oddjobber's phone, leading to the additional charge.

The three-year sentence for this charge will serve consecutively with the 10-year sentence for the assault. The case was investigated by Insp Victor Buckand Dusim Oh, and the prosecutors were Deputy Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid. Both defendants were unrepresented by counsel during the proceedings.
