Dos Santos, Russell set world records in 'crazy' Zurich Diamond League

Zurich witnessed a night of extraordinary performances in track and field during the Diamond League meet on Thursday, with World Athletics president Sebastian Coe expressing his delight at the event. Brazil's Alison Dos Santos and the United States' Masai Russell both set new world records, while Sweden's Armand Mondo Duplantis claimed victory in the pole vault.

The event was held at Letzigrund Stadium, hosting a sold-out crowd of 25,000 spectators. Dos Santos clocked a remarkable 45.80 seconds in the women's 100 meters, surpassing the previous record of 45.94 seconds set by Norway's Karsten Warholm at the Tokyo Olympics. Russell followed with an impressive 12.09 seconds in the men's 100 meters, outperforming the previous record of 12.12 seconds set by Nigeria's Tobi Amusan at the 2022 Eugene World Championships.

The pole vault saw Duplantis prevail with a jump of 6.25 meters, breaking the previous record of 6.20 meters set by both Duplantis and Greek athlete Emmanouil Karalis. The women's 800 meters saw Switzerland's Audrey Werro claim the third-fastest time ever, clocking 1:53.70. Kenyan athlete Emmanuel Wanyonyi secured a hard-fought victory in the men's 800 meters, finishing with a world-leading time of 1:41.76, just 0.07 seconds behind fellow Kenyan Djamel Sedjati.
