Democratic hopefuls flock to Michigan – and El-Sayed

Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan issued an apology on Saturday to the state's Jewish Democratic Caucus for remarks he made following an attack on a synagogue in March. The incident prompted El-Sayed to link the assault to Israel's actions in the Middle East. He acknowledged that his words "may have been misconstrued to justify something I did not mean to justify" and expressed regret for any hurt he may have caused.

El-Sayed's apology comes as he seeks to unify Democrats after a contentious primary where he defeated U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens. He is currently facing Republican nominee Mike Rogers in a closely-watched race that could determine control of the Senate. In March, Ayman Mohammad Ghazali, a man who had recently lost four family members to an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, attacked Temple Israel synagogue in a Detroit suburb, ramming his vehicle into the building and subsequently opening fire on a security guard before taking his own life.

El-Sayed condemned the attack and stated, "hurt people hurt people," in reference to the gunman's tragic background. However, critics argued that he was inadvertently justifying Ghazali's actions through his comments. El-Sayed clarified on Saturday that his intention was to provide context for the attack, but he recognized that such explanations should not minimize the pain experienced by others.
