City Hall, KNCCI Unveil Roadmap to Boost MSMEs and Ease Cost of Doing Business
The platform is expected to make participation in county trade activities more seamless and transparent while increasing local businesses’ access to investors, buyers and credit providers.
NAIROBI, Kenya — The Nairobi City County Government has teamed up with the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) to simplify the cost of doing business and enhance the operating conditions for enterprises in the capital. This collaboration aims to eliminate administrative hurdles, simplify licensing and compliance procedures, and create fresh avenues for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), artisans, and manufacturers to secure funding and market access.
The initiative is set to be executed under the “Jenga Biz, Jenga Nairobi: Partnering for a Thriving Nairobi Economy” program, which unites the county government and the private sector to transform policy discussions into tangible economic actions.
A cornerstone of this partnership is the Trade Fair Digital Portal, designed to allow businesses to register as exhibitors, select sponsorship plans, and access logistics information online. This platform is anticipated to make involvement in county trade events more efficient and transparent, thereby expanding local businesses' access to investors, buyers, and credit providers.
During the launch event, Nairobi County Executive for Business Hustler Opportunities, Dr. Anastasia Nyalita, announced the county's shift from merely being a regulator to actively supporting business growth. She explained, “The Nairobi City County Government is moving away from being just a regulator to an active enabler of economic enterprise.”
Nyalita highlighted the county's efforts to reduce compliance burdens, streamline licensing, and establish a predictable business environment, enabling entrepreneurs to concentrate on expanding their businesses rather than dealing with bureaucratic complexities.
The county government and KNCCI are currently finalizing a binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to outline progress on ease-of-doing-business reforms, policy adjustments, and market development for local enterprises. Dr. Maxwell Okoth, KNCCI Programs Director, emphasized that this partnership will transition government-private sector interactions from consultations to concrete actions.
He stated that structured policy discussions at upcoming roundtables will help decrease compliance costs and enhance business predictability, while an upcoming business forum and trade fair will connect MSMEs, manufacturers, and artisans with institutional investors, regional buyers, and credit providers.
Scheduled for September 17, the Business Breakfast Forum will precede the main trade fair, aiming to enhance supply-chain connections and improve capital accessibility for businesses throughout the region. This partnership positions Nairobi's small businesses at the heart of the county's economic strategy, aiming to foster a more supportive and predictable environment for enterprises to launch, operate, and expand.
Furthermore, the initiative seeks to bolster cooperation between the public and private sectors in promoting investment, trade, and job creation in Nairobi.
