Chile’s Colbún Reservoir Spills into the Maule River as Red Alert Hits the Region

Chile's flagship artificial reservoir, the Colbún Dam, initiated a controlled water release into the Maule River on Thursday, 27 August, 27 hours after reaching 98% of its capacity. The Chilean disaster agency, SENAPRED, declared a red alert for the Maule region as a precaution, signifying a full emergency coordination protocol.

The decision to spill the water came before new weather systems arrived from the Andes, which in the coming weeks could lead to heavier rainfall and snowmelt in the region. The spill aims at preserving storage space in the reservoir for the oncoming precipitation.

The Maule region, situated along Chile's central coast, is particularly vulnerable to riverine flooding. As the water from the spill flows downstream, it raises concerns for riverbank communities, campers, and farmers residing near the Maule River. Authorities have advised these groups to stay away from the riverbanks, islands, and camping areas to avoid potential hazards.

The Colbún Dam, which has been in operation since 1985, is the largest artificial reservoir in Chile. It generates electricity for over a million people through its hydroelectric plant, which can produce 474 megawatts of power. However, the reservoir is currently at its maximum capacity, leaving little room for additional water.

The Ministry of Public Works anticipates more rainfall and snowmelt in the coming weeks, which could exacerbate the river's flow. SENAPRED will closely monitor the water's progress towards the Maule region's coast, providing regular updates to the public and authorities through their official channels.
