He emphasized the significance of the US in the Asia-Pacific, insisting on preserving a favorable balance of power to prevent hegemony. Colby highlighted the Philippines as a "model ally" and stressed the commitment of the US to preserving regional freedom from hegemony. However, despite Colby's reassurances and strategic goodwill, Southeast Asian nations remained skeptical of the US' commitment.

The region is grappling with economic strife caused by US tariffs and the Iran war, and key countries have strengthened their alliances with China. The US has failed to provide adequate military and economic assistance to its closest ally, the Philippines, despite mounting challenges. Colby's approach, known as "flexible realism," appears unrealistic, as it contradicts the administration's actions in other regions and fails to address the growing Chinese presence in Southeast Asia.

Despite some positive developments, such as the Philippines' approval of an expanded US military presence, the nation still lacks high-grade weapons and fighter jets. The Philippine-US alliance faces challenges as China increases its presence and harassment in the South China Sea, exposing the limits of this alliance.
